JUST IN: Armed policemen take over Rivers Assembly Quarters

1 min read

No fewer than 30 armed policemen have taken over all entrances to the House of Assembly quarters in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

This development comes just 24 hours after Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s surprise visit to the facility on Thursday.

The Hon. Martins Amaewhule-led Assembly had raised alarm that the governor was planning to demolish the quarters, but Governor Fubara dismissed the claims, stating that he visited the assembly quarters as part of his property inspection.

“Is the Assembly quarters not part of my property? Is there anything wrong in going to check how things are going on there?” he asked.

However, in a sudden twist on Friday, both the first and second gates to the lawmakers’ Estate were barricaded by the police, with about 30 patrol vans used to block the entrances. Armed policemen were seen safeguarding the gates, fueling tension and uncertainty among the lawmakers and residents of the area.

The reason behind the heavy deployment of policemen to the Rivers Assembly quarters remains unclear, but it is believed to be connected to the ongoing political tensions in the state.

The development has raised concerns among the lawmakers and the public, who are calling for calm and restraint.
