Nnamdi Kanu reportedly agrees to FG’s conditions for his release

The detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has reportedly agreed to comply with the conditions set by President Bola Tinubu’s administration for his release from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).
This development was disclosed by the senator representing Abia South Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Sen. Enyinnaya Abaribe, following a recent meeting between South East senators and the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Lateef Fagbemi SAN.
The meeting, led by Sen. Abaribe, included approximately 15 federal lawmakers and focused on Kanu’s release.
Sen. Abaribe expressed optimism that the Attorney-General would persuade the Federal Government to consider releasing Kanu, noting that his prolonged detention has exacerbated insecurity and unrest in the South East region.
According to Vanguard, Sen. Abaribe revealed that he personally met with Kanu at the DSS headquarters, where Kanu expressed his willingness to comply with the government’s conditions for his release.
The senators’ meeting with the Attorney-General came after South East governors appealed directly to President Tinubu for Kanu’s freedom.
Previously, a group of 50 House of Representatives members had urged President Tinubu to direct the Attorney-General to use Section 174 of the Constitution to terminate the terrorism-related charges against Kanu.
Nnamdi Kanu’s legal troubles began with his arrest in Lagos in October 2015, followed by bail in April 2017, and subsequent escape from the country. He was re-arrested in Kenya in June 2021 and has since remained in DSS custody.
Despite the Court of Appeal ordering his release in October 2022, the Supreme Court overturned this decision in December 2023, allowing the Federal Government to continue with the trial on seven remaining charges.
This ongoing legal battle continues to garner significant attention and advocacy efforts from lawmakers and leaders in Nigeria’s South East region.
