Show respect, support for aged persons – Goups task Nigerians

A call has gone out to Nigerians to always show respect and support to aged persons in the society. The call was made by Wisdom Care Foundation and Elderly People’s Forum of Christ the King Catholic Church (CKC) in Kubwa, Abuja, NAN reports.

NAN said that this was contained in a statement by the Convener, Wisdom Care Foundation, Wisdom Ndubuisi.
He spoke during the two-day event to commemorate the Catholic Day for Elderly Persons in collaboration with CKC Parish, Kubwa.

The World Day for Grand Parents and the Elderly with the theme, “Do not cast me off in my old Age”, was organized to promote the welfare of elderly individuals in the community.

According to Ndubuisi, the Wisdom Care Foundation and its sister organisation, Beyond Health Initiative, partnered with the forum to provide a range of activities and services to some aged in the community.

He stated that free medical tests and consultations were conducted by standby doctors and other health personnel at the programme. They also administered medications on the elderly as needed.

The convener maintained that the event is in line with the theme for this year programme . He noted that the theme was chosen to address the challenges most elderly people face in the society.

“Loneliness and hunger are some of the major challenges for them. This is because most of the times their children are not with them. They have gone to look for greener pastures in other towns.

“So, we decided to step in and do something about it.
“We are equally calling on children and other well-meaning Nigerians to always respect and provide support for the elderly people around them.”

In his remark, the Chairman of Human Life and family committee CKC parish, Kubwa, Daniel Achimugu commended the programme. He also praised the Wisdom Care Foundation for hosting the event.

According to him, since the Church started celebrating elderly people four years ago, this is the first time the committee got support from outside.

Achimugu said the initiative was borne out of the desire to look out for the well-being of the aged people. And to try and improve their lives generally in the areas of health, welfare provision, among others.

He also commended the donors and others for their show of concern for the lives of the elderly. He noted that it would go a long way to easing their loneliness. And also make their lives worth living.

NAN reports that the highlight of the event was the participation of the elderly in fun activities. Such as singing, handball and brain teasing quizzes.

They also received gifts items like clothing, umbrellas, food supplies and cash. As well as awards to recognize outstanding performances amongst them.
