Rivers confirms two cases of deadly Mpox infection

The Rivers State Government has confirmed two cases of the Mpox infection within its jurisdiction. This announcement was made by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Adaeze Oreh, during a news conference in Port Harcourt.

Dr. Oreh revealed that the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) recently confirmed 39 Mpox cases nationwide, with Rivers State accounting for two of these cases. In response, the state has placed its Public Health Emergency Operations Centre on high alert to manage and address any potential emergencies.

The state government has dispatched medical teams to handle emergencies across various healthcare facilities, including general and specialist hospitals. Dr. Oreh emphasized that an incident response plan for Mpox has been implemented and resources have been mobilized to track and manage all cases of the infection in Rivers State.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Health has engaged and trained ad hoc staff to monitor and combat the Mpox infection effectively. “These ad hoc staff are now equipped to respond to this infection at all levels of our healthcare system,” Dr. Oreh stated.

The proactive measures aim to contain the infection and prevent further spread, ensuring that the state remains vigilant and prepared to handle any developments related to Mpox.
