We didn’t join 2022 ASUU strike – CONUA tells Education Minister, appeals for payment of withheld salary

The Congress of University Academics (CONUA) has, again, appealed to the Federal Government to clear the three and a half months withheld salary arising from the 2022 strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The meeting which was called by the the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman with the Dr. ‘Niyi Sunmonu-led national leadership of CONUA, centred on the various issues affecting university education in the country, especially the welfare of academic staff.

Speaking, on Thursday, in Abuja, at the meeting with the Minister, the National President of CONUA, Dr. Sunmonu reminded that the association never participated in the strike action called by ASUU.

Besides, Dr. Sunmonu, who led the union executive to the meeting demanded the payment of outstanding Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) and payment of promotion arrears.

Others were timely payment of pensions, negotiation through collective bargaining, payment of third party deductions (of the withheld salaries paid through presidential prerogative), NEEDS Assessment Committee among others.

While appealing for patience and perseverance from the unions, the minister disclosed that all the issues raised by the union are in the front burner with the government, noting that the efforts will soon pay off.

Prof. Mamman added that all stakeholders in the education sector needed to be engaged in generating ideas for the success of the sector.

He said: “The ministry stands for anything that will enhance the quality of service in the ministry.”
