Yobe govt. denies payment of N70,000 Minimum Wage

The Yobe State Government has refuted claims circulating on social media platforms that it has approved the payment of the new minimum wage of N70,000.

In an official press release issued by the Director General of Media and Press Affairs to the Governor, Mamman Mohammed, on Thursday, it clarified that no official statement has been made by the government regarding the payment of the minimum wage.

“The attention of Yobe State government has been drawn to a false and misleading post on the social media alleging approval of a new wage,” the statement revealed.

The government emphasised that it is still in the process of deliberating on the matter and will provide an official statement once a decision has been reached.

The press release condemned the dissemination of false information, labelling it as “irresponsible and misleading for individuals to speak on behalf of the state government without authorisation.” Additionally, it highlighted the lack of specifics and credibility in the initial post, questioning its legitimacy.

“It is therefore grossly irresponsible, pre-emptive and misleading for anyone to unofficially speak, or post any statement for, or on behalf of the state government,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, a leading newspaper (not PUNCH) which was fiñgered to have authored the report has officially disclaimed the content, stating that the logo featured on the online post does not belong to the publication, and the alleged story can not be found on its website.

“Similarly, Daily Trust newspaper has disowned the content, saying the logo used on the online post is not its logo, and the story could not be found on its website,” the statement emphasised.

Therefore, it urged the citizens to disregard the inaccurate information and await the official statement from the Yobe State Government for authentic and reliable updates on the minimum wage issue.
