LP crisis: Julius Abure tackles Nenadi Usman over INEC de-registration claim

2 min read

The Comrade Julius Abure-led Labour Party (LP) has strongly refuted claims made by the Stakeholders’ Interim National Chairperson, Sen. Nenadi Usman, asserting that her committee saved the party from deregistration by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
In a statement released, on Tuesday, the National Publicity Secretary of the LP, Obiora Ifoh, denounced Usman’s assertions as ‘ludicrous, unattainable, unsubstantiated, and a pack of lies’. According to Mr. Ifoh, the Labour Party was in good standing and fully compliant with legal requirements, rendering any threats of deregistration baseless.

The statement highlighted that the September 4, 2024 Stakeholders’ meeting in Umuahia, which Usman claimed was crucial in averting deregistration, was both unconstitutional and illegal. Ifoh pointed out that the party’s constitution does not recognize the Stakeholders’ group or its decisions, branding Usman’s claims as preposterous.
Ifoh also emphasised that the Labour Party’s leadership, under Julius Abure, is legally affirmed by various courts, including the Appeal Courts in Edo and FCT, and a Federal High Court in Abuja. He noted that the Supreme Court has ruled that internal party matters, such as delegate issues and conventions, are outside the jurisdiction of any court.

The LP spokesperson criticized Usman and her associates for attempting to pressure INEC and engage in forum shopping, highlighting that such actions are counterproductive. He urged Usman and her supporters to cease their factionalizing efforts and focus on the party’s unity and upcoming elections.

The controversy centers around Usman’s recent statement, where she claimed that the intervention of her committee prevented INEC from taking action against the Labour Party due to leadership disputes.
