Zamfara gov. accuses Defence Minister, Matawalle of involvement in banditry

Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has publicly accused Defence Minister, Bello Matawalle, of involvement in banditry activities.
Governor Lawal made this claim on TVC‘s Politics Tonight program, citing ‘credible information’.
This accusation comes amidst ongoing banditry issues in northern Nigeria, particularly in Zamfara, Kaduna, and Katsina states.
Governor Lawal’s statement alleged that his predecessor, Matawalle, was “fully involved” in banditry activities. This is not the first time Matawalle had faced such allegations. Notorious bandit leader, Kachallah Bello Turji previously made similar claims in a video statement in July, insisting that Matawalle supported terrorism in Nigeria’s North West region.
Matawalle has denied these allegations through his media consultant, Deyemi Saka, labeling them as unfounded. However, Turji maintains his stance, and now Governor Lawal has added his voice to the accusations.
Recall that the Defence Minister served as Zamfara State Governor from 2019 to 2023 and is currently the Minister of State for Defence. His political career spans over two decades, with roles in the House of Representatives and various state commissions.
The accusations have sparked concerns about the involvement of high-ranking officials in banditry activities. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has been criticized for inaction, with Governor Lawal alleging that Matawalle stole over ₦70 billion from the state.
