UN disagrees with Atiku over planned nationwide protests

A former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, and the United Nations have taken opposing stances on the upcoming protests against economic hardship in Nigeria.
Atiku criticised the government for attempting to suppress citizens’ constitutional right to peaceful protest, labeling such efforts as futile and undemocratic.

He pointed out the irony that those currently stifling protest rights were themselves leading protests in 2012.
In contrast, the UN’s Department of Safety and Security issued a warning, expressing concerns that the planned protests could be exploited by groups with hidden agendas. They cited previous instances of violence during protests and cautioned against potential disruptions to economic and social activities.

The disagreement highlights a contentious issue regarding the balance between citizens’ rights and maintaining public order in Nigeria.
