UNN VC urges Deans, HODs to utilise IGR to supplement govt. fund

Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Prof. Romanus Ezeokonkwo, has urged Deans of faculties and Heads of Departments in the Institution to utilise their local Internally-Generated Revenue (IGR) to supplement the Government’s fund to the university.
Ezeokonkwo made the call in Nsukka on Tuesday during Prof. Emeka Nweze, Dean, Faculty of Biological Sciences, UNN, Deanship Scorecard and presentation of a brand new Bus purchased with the Faculty’s local IGR to the university management.
He said that funding of public universities should not be left alone for the Federal Government, noting that Prof. Nweze has proven that with proper utilization of local IGR, Departments, and Faculties can adequately provide some of their needs for effective teaching and learning without waiting for government funds.

“Local internally generated revenues are funds generated within faculties and departments, so Faculties and Departments can supplement the funds the government is bringing to the university by utilizing their locally generated revenue.
“No place in the world that Government fund universities all alone, so we are encouraging Facilities and departments to introduce and engage in projects that will increase their local internally generated revenue to enhance their teaching and learning environment.
“The Dean of Biological Sciences has just proved that Faculties can generate money internally and use it to provide some of their need as well as augment what the university is getting from the government.
“I am overwhelmed that within two years the Dean executed 42 projects for the Faculty using the Faculty’s IGR, this is highly commendable and the university management is very proud of him,” he said.
The Acting VC urged other Deans of Faculties and Heads of Departments to emulate Prof. Nweze’s leadership qualities and prudent management of IGR and supplement their infrastructural deficits as well as improve their teaching and research capabilities.

Earlier in a remark, Prof. Nweze who is rounding off his tenure as the Dean of Biological Sciences (2022-2024) said that his achievements were the result of the cordial relationship he enjoyed with the University management, staff, and Board members of the Faculty.
He said that the Faculty under his watch had to explore other means to raise their IGR to facilitate the execution of 42 projects.
“I am here today to tell the Acting Vice-Chancellor and his management team what I have done as the Dean Faculty of Biological Science in the last two years.
“By the grace of God, my administration executed and accomplished 42 major projects in the Faculty, and this was made possible because of the support and cordial relationship I enjoyed from the Acting VC and his immediate processor Prof. Charles Igwe, and the staff of the Faculty.
“I am someone who is hungry for achievements, and that was what propelled me to go to private individuals, people that have graduated from the Faculty, organizing workshops and seminars to ensure that all is needed teaching and learning in the faculty are provided to someone extends.
“It is disturbing that a faculty as big as the Faculty of Biological Science in UNN has no official bus, that was why I took it upon myself to ensure that the faculty has a bus for its official function so that it can facilitate the delivery of research and academic dividends,” he said.
Some of Prof. Nweze’s major accomplishments in the faculty include; the purchase of an 18-seater Toyota Hummer faculty bus, the Repenting/Rehabilitation of the faculty building, Construction of the first standard car parking stands with padded roof in Faculty, Installation of digital CCTV cameras covering the faculty building as well as at the joining areas, Construction of overhead tank in microbiology Block A, among others.
