In a recent segment on Arise News’ Morning Show, anchor Rufai Oseni criticised the Presidency’s assertion that “nobody is above the law,” particularly in light of the ongoing controversies surrounding former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello.
Rufai contended that the notion of equality before the law is often selectively applied, pointing to Bello’s alleged evasion of legal accountability as a prime example.
This discussion arose following the arrest of Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), who was barred from traveling to a UK Trade Union Congress conference. The Nigerian Presidency, represented by Bayo Onanuga, defended the government’s actions, emphasising that Nigeria operates under the rule of law and that all individuals are subject to lawful investigations.
Rufai challenged this narrative, arguing that the government’s claim of a law-abiding society is undermined by the apparent impunity enjoyed by certain individuals, like Bello, who he suggested has been elusive and possibly hiding in the Kogi State government house. He highlighted the contradiction in the government’s stance, noting that even prominent figures like former U.S. Presidents Donald Trump and Joe Biden have faced investigations, suggesting that true adherence to the rule of law should apply universally, without exception.
This exchange reflects broader concerns regarding accountability and human rights in Nigeria, particularly in the context of political power dynamics and the treatment of dissenting voices.
